MacMillan Tartans

Tartans are the most recognisable and famous of all Scottish symbols.

Clan MacMillan has three basic tartans, the Dress, the Hunting, and the Old, with variations in color tone in each.

Most tartans that you see are Modern colors, which are bright, vibrant colors using modern dyes.

Another variation is Ancient colors, which are a subdued tone representing the vegatable dyes of days gone by.

A third variation is Muted colors, which are similar to ancient.

A final variation is Weathered colors, which is said to represent a piece of fabric that has been buried in a peat bog.

MacMillan & Scottish Symbols

Contrary to what some vendors would want you to believe, there is no such thing as a "Family Coat of Arms". Coats of Arms are marticulated to an individual by the Lord Lyon. The Court of the Lord Lyon is the officaial heraldry office for Scotland. Clansmen may, however wear a "Belted Crest", which is the crest, or uppermost part of the Chief's Coat of Arms, surrounded by a buckled belt bearing the clan motto.

The MacMillan crest is a "two handed sword proper", and our clan motto is "Miseris Succurrere Disco", roughly "I Learn to Care For the Needy"

In days of old, clansman would identify themselves with a Plant Badge, using a sprig of the plant worn on their clothing. The MacMillan Plant badge is the Holly.
